A House of Tea 38C3 Playlist

Context and Selection

Playlist made by assembling roughly 40-50 albums to co-exist and transition tracks in between each other, minus tracks that weren't in the vibe.

The intended vibe was: diverse, warm, tropical and funky and only a little bit bizarre, mostly analog, with a generous touch of modern popular French music (Jul, Aya Nakamura). Tracks judged too dark and/or too fast were removed, with a few notable exceptions (The Hacker, Keny Arkana, some xWave and one track from LowKey).

Music comes from 5 continents, mostly tropical regions. Languages in songs is mostly: French (Jul, Keny Arkana, Aya Nakamura, Stromae, Amadou et Mariam), Latino-American Castilliano (Los Mirlos, Dengue Dengue, Los Pirañas), Arabic (Omar Suleyman, Acid Arab, Lili Boniche), several African languages and dialects, Brazilian Portuguese (Branko), English, Mandarin, etc. and at least one track in German (Vicky Leandros - Ich Liebe das Leben <3)

A few label sampler albums (Tru Thoughts recs. 2022 <3, Last Gas Station 2018, 13 Organisé, Equation recs.), a few compilations on the excellent Analog Africa label, and an over-representation of Jul and Aya Nakamura :)

Technical Details

All was played using Rockbox on a hifi player, from FLAC files.

A cross-fading of 8 sec. was enabled in betwen the tracks, as well as a weak “Auditory Fatigue Reduction”, and a perceptual bass enhancement with a -2.5 dB pre-cut.

(NB: One album or two -Omar Souleyman- have an overall volume notably lower than the rest… this should be fixed in further iteration…)
